“My husband proudly served on active duty in the United States Air Force. Our lives changed forever when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and ultimately passed away on February 18, 2014, while still serving. I became a Gold Star widow at 30 years old, and our son, Noah, was only two when he lost his dad. In the years since his death, Noah and I have learned how to carry both grief and gratitude together. As Noah has grown, so has his understanding of who his father was, the life of service he chose, and the sacrifice that became part of our family's story. Now a teenager, Noah is involved in football, band, church, and school, and I am incredibly proud of the young man he is becoming. Being part of the Gold Star community has also shown us how meaningful it is to connect with organizations and people who understand that the impact of military loss does not end after the funeral. It continues through birthdays, milestones, graduations, and all the moments when someone important is missing. Our service member will always be an important part of our family. We are grateful for opportunities like those provided by Sugar Bear that recognize Gold Star families, honor the service and sacrifice of our fallen loved ones, and create meaningful experiences and memories for the families they left behind.”
