My late husband, LTC David Briseno, served in the military for 27 years. He initially started out in the National Guard while attending college at Baylor University in Waco, TX and then transferred to the US Army. He served until his passing on 7/31/2020. David started out as a tanker but then he moved into Medical Logistics. David took his service very seriously and always excelled at his work. He had an ability to work efficiently and lead with grace. He was always available to help his colleagues in any way he could, no matter what day or time they needed him. Although he was well respected by all of his colleagues, he was always humble and spoke very little of his accomplishments. David was easy to be proud of, although he never liked to be acknowledged in any way. He only cared about taking care of his family and making sure that we had all of our needs and as many of our wants met as possible. Seeing his family happy is what made him happy. I remember when he was promoting to Lieutenant Colonel, I wanted for us to celebrate him with a party. He refused and said that all he wanted was to have his family, his mom, siblings, and aunt get together for a small promotion ceremony at his grandparents gravesite. I borrowed a flag from my kids school and drove it two hours to Waco, TX to the cemetery and we had a small ceremony there. I had never seen David so happy and he cried as he thanked us for supporting him in his service. It was a special day and means so much since we lost him not even one year later. We have all learned so much from David’s life and service. I believe what I have learned is to always prioritize what’s most important, my faith and my family. I’ve also learned from David’s death that there is no time to show the people that I love what they mean to me because you never know when it will be the last time you will have the opportunity. Although David’s passing was due to his service, I am grateful for the many lessons he learned and we have learned from his service. I will forever be grateful for his sacrifice and the sacrifice of all service members and their families.
